What's Gonna Happen to Black Panther 2 and Why Marvel Didn't Know About Chadwick Boseman's Cancer

According to a new report from the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios wasn’t aware of Chadwick Boseman’s illness. Outside of family, only a small group of insiders were aware of the Marvel star’s battle with cancer per his wishes, and now studio executives are grieving and figuring out a way forward. On Aug. 28, Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige received an urgent email regarding Chadwick Boseman, with no further information. Unbeknownst to anyone at the studio, the Black Panther star had been battling colon cancer privately for four-plus years and had taken a sudden turn for the worse. By the time Feige read the message an hour later, Boseman had already passed away, sending shock waves through Disney and the tight-knit Marvel community. A source close to Boseman tells The Hollywood Reporter that the 43-year-old actor, who had become noticeably thin in recent months, was convinced until about a week before his death that he was going to beat cancer and would be able to gain the weight back for a Black Panther sequel that was scheduled to go into production in March. The actor was even set to prepare for the new film beginning in September. Disney sources say the company is processing its grief and that its focus at this stage is to pay tribute to Boseman and not on the making of a Black Panther sequel. Most observers agree that Disney has several options. One is to replace Boseman, which could generate a fan outcry and prompt inevitable comparisons between actors. However, it’s nothing new to the MCU as actors have been replaced in the past like Terrence Howard’s James Rhodes being replaced by Don Cheadle, and Edward Norton being replaced by Mark Ruffalo as the new Hulk. And even though fans are currently very adamant about not recasting the character, his story is far from over and is crucial to the future of the MCU by not only introducing Namor the Submariner and Atlantis in the sequel but also possibly Wolverine and Strom in Black Panther 2’s post-credit scene, connecting to Spider-Man 3’s rumored villain Kraven the Hunter who is said to be a descendant of an exiled and extinct Wakandan tribe, and even playing a large role in or putting together the Illuminati. So I think that Marvel has to be very careful in what they choose to do with the character moving forward either retire him or think of everything he still needs to do in the future and decide what’s best for Chadwick Boseman’s memory, the fans, and the character. But I’ve also heard people say to bring back Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger and make him the new King of Wakanda, this way they can somehow remove Black Panther from the story, and because of everything that happened in the original Black Panther movie, the Golden Jaguar would be a better person and the true King of Wakanda. And the second option, which may be more tenable, is to make T’Challa’s sister, Shuri the new Black Panther. That scenario also aligns with events portrayed in one of the comic book series on which the film is based on and it’s been said that she’ll join the Young Avengers. However, like we learned yesterday Avengers Endgame wasn’t the last time we’ll see Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther as he was able to film his lines for Marvel’s animated series What If.
