Vintage Neon Animation Controller 🕹️

This device is an electromechanical sign flasher that powered animated signs before computers. Made by Time-O-Matic, it uses mechanical motion to control electricity.

Inside the metal box, an electric motor spins a central shaft with several cams. Each cam has ridges and notches. As they rotate, they push metal contacts open and closed, creating the rapid clicking sound.

Every time a contact closes, it completes a circuit and sends power to a specific part of the sign. By shaping the cams, engineers controlled exactly when and how long each section lit up. That timing creates the animation. It’s a simple, durable solution that uses motors, contacts, and timing instead of electronics.
