McCarthy: "Trump has more power than Reagan"

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said President Trump is expanding White House power to new heights during a conversation Wednesday at the Harvard Kennedy School.

"Right now, Trump has more power than Reagan," the former speaker said. "We haven't seen a president like this on either party since Roosevelt."

Mr. McCarthy said President Trump's actions have weakened Congress: "He's the whip and the speaker," he said. "Article One is the power of Congress; well, that's kind of been usurped right now."

The California Republican, who served as minority leader for four years, became speaker in January 2023 after the GOP took the House. But he was removed from office by a vote of his colleagues in October of that year after cutting a deal with Democrats to avert a government shutdown.
