5 FUN Ways to Introduce Piano Students to Improvisation from Day 1!
🤩 5 FUN Ways to Introduce 🎹 Improvisation to your students from Day 1!
.
.
.
1. Teacher/Student Duet on the black keys!
Once you introduce your student to the basic layout of piano keys, you can already do this fun improv exercise!
The student will produce sound/melody using black keys only.
You will be the secondo of the duo--play the chord progression of I, vi, VI, and V in the key of G-flat major. Just keep the same sequence over and over while the student is playing on the black keys.
Voila! You'd be surprised how this simple improvisation can make such beautiful music!
2. Teacher/Student Duet based on Major Scales.
Once the student is familiar with the notes on the white keys, you can already do this fun improv exercise.
Once again, you will be the second during the improv session. Have the student play the scale back and forth while you are playing the chord progression.
3. Harmonization using a simple melody.
Teach the student about I, IV, and V chords. Eventually, they can add ii, iv, and iii.
4. Transposition is an essential part of learning improvisation. Using the same simple melody from No.3, have them transpose to different keys.
5. Different accompaniment patterns. This is the best part of improvisational exercises! How many different accompaniment patterns will you or your student come up with?
