Sonics at Jazz - Game 5 - 2000 First Round - 5/5/00 (Highlights)

The Utah Jazz advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals with a 96-93 victory over the Seattle Supersonics in Game 5 of their first round best-of-5 series.

Karl Malone led Utah with 27 points while John Stockton recorded 17 points, 15 assists and 7 rebounds on 6-9 shooting. All-5 Jazz starters scored in double-figures with Bryon Russell notching 16 pts, Jeff Hornacek 13 pts, 5 reb & 5 ast and a surprising 13 pts from center Olden Polynice.

Gary Payton once again led Seattle in scoring with 27 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Rookie Rashard Lewis scored 20 pts and Vin Baker added 17.

A frenzied crowd at the Delta Center saw the Jazz take an early 5-point lead after the first quarter (23-18) before both teams exploded with big second-quarters as Seattle trimmed Utah's lead to 53-49 by halftime.
Utah extended its lead to double-digits in the 3rd-period and took a 79-70 lead into the 4th-qtr before Gary Payton and Vin Baker led a Sonics charge that gave Seattle a chance to tie the game on the final play of regulation. Unfortunately for Seattle, coach Paul Westphal opted to insert veteran Chuck Person into the game for the final play and The Rifleman's (who had not seen game action since playing precisely 1-minute since March 2nd for the Sonics) long 3pt was off the mark and Utah emerged with a 96-93 victory to set the stage for a matchup with the Portland Trailblazers in the 2nd-round.
