Hal Ashby directed the 1971 cult classic 'Harold and Maude' - Daily Mail

Oscar winner and Utah native Hal Ashby (top right) directed a string of 1970s films that remain favorites, from Coming Home (main), which earned Oscars for stars Jane Fonda and Jon Voight, and cult class Harold and Maude (bottom right). As movie-making progressed through the 1980s and favored big-budget productions, Ashby - who was passionate but difficult - lost work with the studios, who blamed his drug use. Now, a new film premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Hal, explores the life and work of Ashby, who died in 1988 at the age of 59 from cancer. Featuring clips from his writings, film and audio interviews, it also explores Ashby's life through the eyes of his friends, relatives and film industry colleagues, from Voight and Fonda (inset) to acclaimed filmmakers such as Judd Apatow, who cite him as a major talent and cinematic influence
