Hoang - Sampling of Unstructured Data and Interactive Visualization
THURSDAY 10 APRIL 2025
Quang Hoang, Clemson University
Many scientific simulations are performed on unstructured and sometimes adaptively refined meshes. ASPECT, the Advanced Solver for Planetary Evolution, Convection, and Tectonics, is no different: it supports arbitrary geometry that can be adaptively refined during the computation. The geometry can also be deforming during the computation.
It is advantageous to output the computed data unaltered to visualize, and modern tools like ParaView can load and render adaptively refined meshes without issues using the unstructured VTK or hdf format, for example. Both are supported in ASPECT. However, it is sometimes advantageous to produce solutions resampled to a structured and (often lower resolution) grid for visualization and post processing. This can improve performance, lower storage requirements, and simplify postprocessing.
We present a sampler that converts intermediate output files produced by ASPECT to structured meshes in both rectangular and spherical geometries and show a few examples. These structured files are also especially suited for interactive visualizations on the web, which we will also demonstrate.
