Review: Orpheus Lives Up To Its Box
One of my top 10 boxed sets that needed to exist (and didn't at the time), Deutsche Grammophon has graciously accommodated music lovers by issuing this 55-CD collection of the label's complete Orpheus Chamber Orchestra recordings. Of course there's some duplication of contents in the repertoire with major, previously boxed up soloists (Maisky, Argerich, Shaham, Kremer), but the vast majority of recordings offer this well-nigh flawless ensemble in all of its conductorless glory. Featured composers include Haydn, Mozart, Handel, Stravinsky, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Rossini, Copland, Respighi, Bartók, Dvořák, Richard Strauss, and too many others to list, in performance of exemplary clarity, virtuosity, excitement and taste. Get it while you can.
