This 8-Minute Video Will Fix How You Think About Break-Even Points Forever.

You sold a strangle. The stock moved to your break-even point. You're losing money. That makes no sense or does it?

Jim Schultz unpacks one of the most common points of confusion for options traders: the break-even point on any P&L graph only applies at expiration. Before expiration, the break-even is a moving target. And the reason is extrinsic value.

When a stock moves toward one of your short strikes, that strike gets closer to at the money — and ATM options carry the highest extrinsic value on the entire chain. So the extrinsic value in the option you sold starts building up. That works directly against you. You want extrinsic value to go down. When it goes up, the delta effect of the move overwhelms whatever theta you've collected so far, and you lose money before you ever reach your "break-even."

Losing money temporarily near your strike early in the trade is not an error. It's just how options are priced.
