"Hard rock, Hendrix and funk are his three whales. The works of the younger of the brothers Gailes outwardly have no connection with the music of their ancestors, with the music of Muddy Waters. However, in essence, Eric's music, with all its complexity, its saturation with elements of other styles, especially heavy rock, remains deeply blues. To emphasize for the incomprehensible this circumstance Eric among others places in the albums a typical and delightful blues. The sound is heavier and less swinging, flexible, which gives out its purpose - to become closer to the tastes of the white listeners.
The biography of the brilliant left-hander in some ways echoes the story of Joe Bonamassa. At least in the part that, like Joe, Eric Giles started playing the guitar in less than five years. You know, kids are apt to ape, to imitate the elders. And Giles had several brothers-guitarists at once.
Similarity and that's another thing. At the age of 11, Eric played already in an adult - on a real guitar, Hendrix's stuff, for example. Producers noticed him at this age, when he won a competition for young talents in his native Memphis. In the 15th young Giles recorded a disc, and for a large company Elektra.
Eric Giles. For very many, this name has shone, when in 1996 appeared absolutely brilliant disk of heavy blues called "Left Hand Brand". He was recorded by Eric in the company with the brothers who dragged him into the profession of an electric guitarist - Eugene and Manuel. Surprisingly, they are all left-handed, and all of them are fantastically gifted musicians. Perhaps the talent was passed on to the guys from his grandfather, who is said to have played jam with Muddy Waters himself.
By style, manner of play and temperament, this is most reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix. The only difference is that the great guitarist did not just jerk the strings, but also generated ideas and thereby made an invaluable contribution to the history of popular music, and the brothers Gales just play cool.
In fact, this is a good Negro blues rock with a lot of funk and jazz. It's clear that without guitar "gadgets" there has not been, but they're analog, that's why there are practically no synthetics (that is, digital electronic instruments and processing) on the album. Everything is natural, fresh, alive. A lot of intense "black" vocals.
And most importantly - emotionally and expressively "(© D. Lovkovsky)
