Knowing how to find the key of a song isn’t always completely straightforward. Especially if you haven’t developed your ears yet or don’t want to rely on them 100%.
Last week, we talked about the Intuitive Method of finding the key using your ears. But what if your ears can’t seem to find a note that feels right to you? Don’t worry - there is a solution.
In this video, we’re taking our quest of finding the key to a song further by relying less on the ‘art’ and more on the ‘science’. Using the ‘Melodic Method’, you’ll be using ‘data’ to guide your choice for the root of the key.
The data’ we’re using isn’t complicated by the way. It’s simply the notes of the melody, but melody notes are almost always in the key of the song.
So how can we use the melody to figure out the key? By following the process in the video!
Notice how this method is a mixture of art and science? You’re still relying on your ear to make the right choice, but you’re using data (the notes of the melody) to guide your decision.
This is a great method for you if your ear is somewhat developed, but you still need a framework to help inform your choice.
Most, if not all of the notes of the melody are probably in the key, so the melody is a great place to start.
The one problem is that you’ll probably find at least 2 - maybe even 3 notes that have the gravity I talk about in the lesson. What are you supposed to do then?
Well, you can actually test whether or not the note you’ve picked is the root of the key using a 2-step process. It’s something I outline in my bonus video, Key Certainty: How To Make Sure You’ve Picked The Right Key.
If you use this melodic method, there are 2 mistakes you are likely to come across and testing method I show you in the bonus video will tell you whether or not you’ve made them - plus how to fix them.
