India is closely monitoring the impact of El Niño amid concerns over a weak southwest monsoon, reduced rainfall and pressure on agricultural output. Key crops such as rice, maize, pulses and oilseeds are particularly vulnerable to rainfall shortages, raising fears of lower yields, reduced rural incomes and a possible rise in food prices. The effects of El Niño were seen during 2015, when maize production declined by 4% and rice output fell by 1%, tightening supplies from one of the world's largest food producers. However, experts believe India is better prepared today, with more than half of the country's cropped area under irrigation and improved agricultural resilience. The Reserve Bank of India has also noted that farm production is now less dependent on weather fluctuations than in previous decades, providing a stronger cushion against potential El Niño-related disruptions.
