Hurricane Laura Quickly Intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico

Hurricane Laura continues to quickly intensity in the Central Gulf of Mexico, with maximum winds of 90mph and a minimum pressure of 978mb confirmed by hurricane hunter aircraft. Laura is in favorable conditions for further strengthening, and is expected to become a major hurricane tomorrow before making a potentially devastating landfall near the Louisiana and Texas border. The latest National Hurricane Center forecast calls for a peak of 120mph, but between that point at 24 hours and landfall, the storm could be stronger. Rapid weakening is expected after Laura makes landfall.

Impacts from Laura in the United States will be life threatening, and may include a storm surge of up to 9-14 feet east of the landfall location in either Texas or Louisiana. 10-15 inches of rainfall near the landfall area is forecast, with 6-10 inches of rain extending much farther inland, even over wide swathes of Arkansas. This raises a very significant threat for flash flooding and river flooding in association with Laura far inland from where the storm makes landfall, as well as on the coast. And dangerously high wind speeds, possibly major hurricane, category 3 force or higher are likely in the vicinity of the landfall location, with damaging winds extending far from the center.
