Modern digital satellite television: How it works

In the United States, over 30 million homes subscribe to digital satellite television services. The goal of this video is to explain how modern satellite television operates. Today's satellite television systems are standardized under the DVB-S2 (Digital Video Broadcasting, Satellite, Second Generation) specification. The video focuses on the specific modulation and coding technologies utilized by DVB-S2, with the objective of explaining how they are able to come close to the Shannon limit. In particular, an overview of Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (APSK) modulation and Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) error-control coding will be given. The talk will conclude with the recent research by the presenter's research group on the topic of constellation shaping, which holds the potential for a 1 dB performance improvement to the DVB-S2 system.
