Large Language Models and Healthcare in Africa: AI as a key determinant of health and disease.

Abstract:
Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have recently generated enormous interest globally for their efficacy at natural language processing. Furthermore, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) research community is recently and almost suddenly approaching concensus that LLMs hold the key towards artificial general intelligence --- a goal which until very recently was deemed unrealistic and infeasible.

Of note, LLMs are only as good as the data on which they are trained. However, African language and experience is drastically underresourced and underdocumented. This has worrisome implications in healthcare for the following reason: patient-physician communication, electronic medical records, geography, and demographics jointly play a vital role as determinants of health and disease.

In this talk, I will be describing this problem, highlighting some prior work in this space, and presenting an early outline of potential solutions.
