2024 Mazda2 Sedan Australian Spec
The Mazda2, once known as the Demio in Japan, has evolved significantly since its days as a twin of the Ford Fiesta. Since 2014, it has become a true Mazda, moving away from its Ford platform roots. Previously sold in the U.S. as the Toyota Yaris iA sedan, the Mazda2 has now entered the 2023 model year with a fresh facelift in Australia.
This marks the second facelift for the Mazda2, following the first in 2019, which brought subtle changes to styling, interior, suspension, headlights, and the engine deceleration energy recovery system. The GVC Plus system also became standard, enhancing stability by applying brake force to the outer wheels as the steering wheel returns to the center position.
The latest facelift, introduced in January 2023, brings more noticeable stylistic updates. These include a new front grille with a color accent on the left side, a redesigned rear bumper, and new exterior paint options. Mazda has also added grade-specific equipment, refreshed seat designs, and new alloy wheels.
The Mazda2 lineup in Australia offers both four-door and five-door models. The sedan is available in Pure and GT trims, while the hatchback comes in Pure, Pure SP, Evolve, and GT trims. All models are powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, delivering 82 kW and 144 Nm with the manual transmission, or 81 kW and 142 Nm with the automatic.
In terms of practicality, the sedan offers a larger cargo volume of 440 liters compared to the hatchback's 250 liters. Both body styles share a wheelbase of 2,570 millimeters. Unlike Europe, where a hybrid Mazda2 is available as a rebadged Toyota Yaris Hybrid, the Australian market does not offer a hybrid option.
Standard features in the Pure trim include a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Smart City Brake Support. The top-tier GT trim adds aero-inspired alloy wheels, black leather, Grand Luxe synthetic suede, red trim, a 360-degree View Monitor, and front parking sensors.
Priced from 22,410 AUD (approximately 14,460 USD), the Mazda2 is manufactured in Thailand by AutoAlliance, a joint venture between Mazda and Ford. The 2023 Mazda2 continues to be a compelling option in the supermini segment, combining stylish updates with practical features.
