Elder’s 2,000 Mile Dance for Grad💯#AboriginalElder #GrandfatherLove #viral #trending #shorts
❤️ Elder Travels Nearly 2,000 Miles to Dance with His Graduating Granddaughter ❤️
In December 2015, respected Yolngu Aboriginal elder Gali Yalkarriwuy Gurruwiwi from the Galpu clan flew over 3,000 km (nearly 2,000 miles) from remote Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island, northeast Arnhem Land (Northern Territory), to Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville, Victoria.
His granddaughter, Sasha Mulungunhawuy Yumbulul, was celebrating her Year 10 graduation — a major milestone. Despite feeling unwell that morning, Gali insisted on performing the traditional Lunggurrma (North Wind / Morning Star) dance with Sasha (and sometimes her sister Alicia), using the sacred feathered Banumbirr pole.
Gali, who speaks mainly in his traditional language, touched his heart and said simply: “Proud.” His wife Jane Garrutju translated: “It was his dream to dance with his granddaughters here.” He expressed deep pride in Sasha and Alicia’s education and the college’s care.
This heartwarming event highlights the power of family love, cultural connection, and the importance of education in Indigenous communities. Sasha, who boarded at Worawa for years, balances her rich Yolngu heritage with modern opportunities and dreams of becoming a nurse while remaining a role model.
