Here, we introduce set-builder notation. We can describe a set of numbers by using notation like this: {x | x (greater than) 2}. That reads: "all real numbers x, such that x is greater than 2". We can also write that as (2,∞). The parentheses mean the value is excluded. If we used brackets like this: [2,∞), that would mean the 2 is included. So we'd use a greater than or equal to symbol for that.
