If you clicked this video it’s safe to assume you (like me) are planning on purchasing a Cybertruck, but maybe you are unsure about which trim level makes the most sense for you. Right now there isn’t a whole lot of information available on options and customizations for the cybertruck, but we do know that we have 3 drivetrain options: single motor, dual motor, and tri-motor.

So in this video i’d like to pull up the specs for each one of these and talk about which one seems to be the best value for the money, and also talk about some potential use cases where one trim might make more sense than the others. So let’s do some math and see what we come up with!

So let’s talk about range first.

The single motor is advertised as 250 miles, and the purchase price is $39,900
This give us a total of $159.60 per mile of range.

The dual motor is advertised as 300 miles, and the purchase price is $49,900.
This comes out to $166.33

The tri-motor is listed as 500 miles of range (which is just crazy..amazing) and the purchase price is $69,900 which comes out to $139.8

So next we are going to look at towing capacity and do the same kind of calculation.

Single motor: Tows 7500 pounds with a $39,900 purchase price is…
$5.32 so you are paying $5.32 per pound of towing capacity.

Dual motor Tows 10,000 and costs $49,900
So that means $4.99 is what you are paying per pound

Tri motor tows 14,000 pounds and costs $69,900 so
That means you are paying $4.99 again per pound

The next metric we can look at is 0-60 time. So I’m going to have to do some weird math here...I think what I’m going to do is pick a baseline, and calculate a percentage of increase over that baseline for each. For a baseline vehicle I’ll use an industry standard truck, the F150 with the base motor which is a 3.3 liter v6 that does 0-60 in 7.9 seconds.

The single motor does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds which is about 18% better than the base F150

The dual motor does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds which is a 43% improvement

The tri motor does it in 2.9 seconds which is a 63% improvement over the base F150. Also from my research, this is a full second faster than any other production pickup truck in history which is absolutely insane.

I know this is kind of strange math, and there are F150s available with different engines, but I’m going to now take these percentages and divide the purchase costs by them to get an idea of HOW much faster to 60 than a “normal” pickup truck you are going be for your money.

So for the single motor we do $39,900/18 which is $2,216 per each percent faster
The dual is $49,900/43 is $1,160
The trimotor is $69,900/63 is $1,109
The only other differentiating factor between the models is the amount of motors so why not apply our logic to this as well.

The single motor leaves you paying $39,900 per motor
The dual has you paying $24,950
The tri motor has you paying $23,300

So another win for the tri-motor.

Another option for each model is FSD, but since it offers the same features for the same cost, the value of that is really a whole other discussion, so I’m not going to cover that in this video, maybe I’ll make another one for that.

So looking at the results here, looking at hard data, and the individual specs for each model against the purchase prices it looks to me that the tri-motor actually gives you the most value for the money which is really interesting and not totally what I expected to find when I sat down to make this video. I think I kind of expected the dual motor to be the happy medium and win these categories, the single motor to be right behind it, and the tri motor to be costing a premium for added performance but it doesn’t seem like that’s actually the case. The tri-motor is objectively the most performance, range, and towing for the money you spend. So Tesla doesn’t seem to be putting a premium price tag on this model just because it’s the highest end option. From what I can tell they are being pretty aggressive with their pricing which is great to see! And with no dealer markups, you will actually be able to get this for MSRP which isn’t something you can say about legacy automakers when they unveil high performance products.

As far as my reservation, I was originally looking at the tri-motor. Not because I really plan on towing much, probably just occasionally. Mostly because I liked the idea of the range, and the performance aspect was really attractive.

But I’ve actually switched my reservation to a dual motor now because I’m kind of a car person and I realized that for the extra $20,000 I could literally buy an entry level sports car that won’t be as fast as the cybertruck, but would make more sense for spirited driving or track days anyway.
