One thing I noticed over the years working with boys with ADHD is how difficult transitions can be for many of them.

Stopping an activity, changing tasks, leaving the house, bedtime, homework, or even small routine changes can quickly lead to frustration or emotional overload.

A few things that often help transitions go smoother:

• giving 5–10 minute warnings
• using visual schedules/checklists
• keeping routines predictable
• avoiding sudden changes when possible
• using calm reminders instead of repeated yelling
• allowing movement breaks between tasks
• keeping instructions short and simple
• transitioning with connection instead of pressure

Many ADHD boys are not intentionally being difficult during transitions — their brains often struggle with shifting focus and regulating emotions quickly.

That’s one of the reasons I wrote The ADHD Parenting Guide for Boys — to give parents practical tools that can help reduce stress at home.
