IPv6 Basics 🌐 Why Every Interface Needs a Link-Local Address 🚀 #CCNA #Networking
In IPv6, every enabled interface is automatically assigned a link-local address, and this address type is the minimum required for IPv6 to function. A link-local address is used for communication between nodes on the same link (local network segment) and is essential for operations such as neighbor discovery, routing protocol exchanges, and automatic address configuration.
Link-local addresses always start with the prefix FE80::/10 and are automatically generated by the device, either from the interface’s MAC address or through a randomization process. Because they are automatically assigned, administrators do not need to configure them manually, although manual assignment is possible.
Other IPv6 address types serve different purposes:
Global unicast → equivalent to public IPv4 addresses, routable on the Internet.
Static → not an actual IPv6 address type, but refers to manually configured addresses.
Loopback (::1) → used for internal testing on a single device.
While global unicast addresses are required for Internet communication, the IPv6 standard specifies that link-local addresses must always exist on every IPv6-enabled interface. Without them, basic IPv6 functions such as routing and neighbor discovery cannot operate.
