A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous lump that often develops along the tendons or joints of your wrists or hands, and sometimes your ankles or feet. It’s filled with a gel-like fluid and can vary in size, sometimes becoming larger with joint activity and shrinking when you rest.

Appearance: Round or oval lump, soft or firm.
Size: Ranges from pea-sized to about an inch in diameter.
Location: Most common on the back of the wrist, but can occur near any joint.
Pain: Often painless, but may cause discomfort if it presses on a nearby nerve.
Cause: Unknown, but may be related to joint irritation, arthritis, or trauma.
Who’s at risk?
Common in women, especially ages 20–40.

Physical exam.
Transillumination (shining a light through the lump).
Sometimes an ultrasound or MRI.

Option Description
Observation If painless, doctors often recommend just monitoring.
Immobilization Wearing a brace or splint can reduce size.
Aspiration Doctor uses a needle to drain the fluid — may recur.
Surgery If it's painful or recurrent, surgical removal may be recommended.
