Cultural Roots Without Borders | Seniors Connecting Silesia and Ostrava

On May 16–17, 2026, participants took part in an educational and cultural visit to Ostrava as part of the project -Cultural Roots Without Borders: Silesia–Ostrava Senior Heritage Exchange (CROWNS)-, coordinated by the Institute for Research and Innovation in Education.

The project aimed to strengthen cultural ties between Silesia and the Czech Republic, explore shared historical heritage, and promote international integration through education and intercultural exchange.

On the first day, participants visited the Silesian Ostrava Castle, where they attended a lecture on the history of the region, the heritage of Silesia, and the development of mining in the Polish–Czech borderland. The visit also included the castle's art gallery and historical exhibitions presenting the history of Ostrava, the Hussite movement, and the Thirty Years' War.

The group also visited the Ostrava Museum and participated in a museum lesson focused on the city's industrial identity and historical development. A guided walk through Masaryk Square introduced participants to the most important historical landmarks of Ostrava, including the Marian Column, the statue of St. Florian, the Old Town Hall, and historic buildings reflecting the city's architectural evolution.

On the second day, participants explored the industrial heritage of Silesia and Ostrava through meetings and discussions dedicated to the history of mining in the region. The visit to Michal Mine in Ostrava provided an opportunity for international exchange with Czech participants, encouraging conversations about shared traditions, mining culture, and the historical connections between the two nations.

The project concluded with a summary meeting during which participants shared reflections and experiences. CROWNS became not only an opportunity to deepen historical and cultural knowledge, but also an important integrative experience, strengthening awareness of common European roots and the value of cross-border cooperation.
