Why does EWS students need justice?

The 10% reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in education and public employment, introduced through the 103rd Constitutional Amendment in 2019, was hailed as a landmark moment.
For the first time, affirmative action in India extended beyond caste-based criteria to acknowledge economic deprivation. However, while it marked a progressive step in addressing economic inequality, the policy remains incomplete, particularly when it comes to age relaxation and extra attempts in competitive examinations. To make this reservation truly equitable, EWS candidates deserve the same procedural relaxations afforded to SC, ST, and OBC candidates. Moreover, EWS students do not have any specific government policies or welfare schemes or performance metrics to measure their improvements, which are prevalent for other reserved categories.
