TEXT
Stabat Mater dolorosa || At the cross her station keeping,
Iuxta crucem lacrimosa || stood the mournful mother weeping,
Dum pendebat Filius. || close to Jesus to the last.

The Stabat Mater is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword would pierce the heart of Mary (Luke 2:35). The text originates from the 13th century and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure (1221-1274), and Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306) -- with da Todi as the most likely author.

Associated often with the Stations of the Cross, it was prescribed as a Sequence in 1727 for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15). The text can also be found in the Office of Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this September 15th memorial.
