In 2020, Sydney Powell was found guilty of murdering her mother. Evidence suggests Powell used an iron skillet to hit her mother, and then stabbed her multiple times with a knife. A Summit County court sentenced her to 15 years to life in prison.

An appeals court reversed the conviction in December 2024. The court found that the judge wrongly denied Powell's attorneys the right to present rebuttal testimony related to her mental health, which was a key part of her defense.

The overturning of the conviction opens the door for a potential second trial.
