The City of Davis is known for being a bustling college bike town making UC Davis the epicenter of an enormous biking community.

Is it simply hearsay or actual truth? We wanted to find out for ourselves so I went and asked the upcoming students of uc davis fall 2015 quarter. Is it biking, bus commuting, walking or something else?

DETAILED SUMMARY

I went to davis california to get a better look into the bicycle culture of the renowned University of Davis. Spanning 5,300 acres UC Davis is the second largest UC campus behind UC Merced. In Fall 2014 the student population was recorded at 35,415 which is a lot of bikes running around campus.

I wanted to see just how this type of bike culture looks up close so I decided to go and take a spontaneous campus tour. After having visited other campuses such as CRC (cosumnes river college) and SCC (sacramento city college) I was amazed by the number of students who are already on campus despite the fact that fall quarter has not even started. Their classes for 2015 officially start on September so it's quite amazing to see a lot of students already up and biking around when it is barely August.

The campus seems to be seamlessly incorporated into the city and there is a lot of parking spots even for a visitor. It is $9 dollars for visitor parking which is relatively pricey, but I found one that is pretty close to the university which makes getting there much easier. Despite that, from a small amount of walking, I can already see why biking is a must on campus. It is large and the campus itself pretty much feels like a city of its own. It seems to have a culture of its own which is very interesting. The more I look into this campus the more I feel like Im discovering a hidden kingdom filled with fun adventures and surprised.

One funny fact about UCD is the fact that apparently one thing returning students like to do is go "newbie watching." I talked to some campus seniors and they mentioned how some people would bring a couch to the bike circle and watch as new bikers struggle to understand the mechanics "bike circles." Also as cited in the video, apparently there are more bikes than bikers. As it got late and campus grounds emptied out, I certainly saw a lot of bikes parked on the bike racks and there was even a lady riding while holding another bike.

During that day however, it was particularly windy and it made recording difficult so some of the interviews were unusable. I would also like to mention how the Peter Shields Library seemed like an amazing place to study. I felt like I was walking into the halls of hogwarts.

Another interesting culture fact about UC Davis is the "egg heads" scattered around campus. I never noticed them specifically walking around, but when some of the interviewees mentioned these upside down creepy looking head statues, I realized just how ubiquitous they are on campus. The students mentioned how these are an iconic symbol among UC Davis students and are often a gathering place for social activities. The nose area is certainly a good place to sit, oddly enough. Makes me wonder if the artist planned that happening. I also wonder how they thought about placing these egg heads across campus. "Hey guys how about we put some creepy looking heads all across campus, that would be awesome."

Despite the fact that I pretty much spent all day filming and walking around campus, I have barely even scratched the surface of what this campus truly is. For anyone who is planning on finishing a degree within the Sacramento region, UC Davis is certainly quite an interesting and oddly magical school to attend. Aside from it's decorated Alumni lineup https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_University_of_California,_Davis_alumni giving proof to it's dedication to providing an effective and top notch education, it also give one a rich college experience.
