The case was presided over by then-Chief Justice Sir Denys Roberts, and the two defendants ultimately received a light sentence of 3 years and 9 months.

Earlier that year in January, a young Scottish police officer named John MacLennan, awaiting trial for engaging in gross indecency, was found dead from five gunshot wounds inside a police dormitory in Ho Man Tin. Reports suggested that MacLennan was silenced due to his knowledge of homosexual scandals involving high-ranking officials and the police force, but the official statement claimed his death was a suicide.
