IMARES Workshop: Karabagh: A Small World War

The 2020 war in Karabagh was perfectly timed to be lost among much other bad news. Yet, its multiple repercussions reach far beyond a mere border dispute between the two post-Soviet states. What does it tell us about the new technologies of warfare? The current world disorder? What are the shifts and stakes in the geopolitical positions of Turkey, Russia, Europe, Iran, or the Arab states? How to make reasoned sense amidst the conspiracy theories, expert opinions, and the usual guesswork?



Dr. Georgi Derluguian—professor of social research and public policy at New York University Abu Dhabi. Among his many scholarly works is the monograph Bourdieu’s Secret Admirer in the Caucasus (2005) and the debate book Does Capitalism Have a Future? (2013, co-authored with Immanuel Wallerstein, Randall Collins, Michael Mann, and Craig Calhoun) translated in seventeen languages incl. German, Finnish, Chinese, Urdu, Polish.



The IMARES Workshop Series hosts prominent representatives from the fields of academia, business, and politics. IMARES program guest speakers share their knowledge and experience by touching upon a variety of topics related to Russian and Eurasian Studies. The lectures are followed by a Q&A session.
