NELFUND has disbursed more than ₦206 billion in student loans — a major milestone for access to tertiary education in Nigeria.

Since the scheme started in May 2024, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund has provided interest-free loans to over 1.16 million students in 270 public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.

The total amount disbursed stands at ₦206.29 billion. This includes:₦128.84 billion paid straight to institutions to cover tuition fees, and
₦77.45 billion sent directly to students as monthly upkeep allowances.

More than 1.7 million applications have been submitted, and disbursements are ongoing for both new and continuing students in the 2025/2026 academic session.

The programme is designed to be fast and transparent: applications are made online through the NELFUND portal, no upfront payment is required, and approved funds are released within 30 days. It targets students who otherwise could not afford higher education due to financial hardship.

The Tinubu administration presents this as a key part of the Renewed Hope agenda — removing money as a barrier to university, polytechnic, or college education. Many students and parents are celebrating the relief it brings, though some are calling for quicker processing in certain institutions and clearer public reporting on individual cases.
