In 270AD a Christian named Anthony made a move bold even for a hermit. Anthony moved to the desert to begin a life of penance, prayer and fasting, and, in by doing so, became the first Christian hermit to live and pray completely in the desert. Since this event thousands followed in his footsteps and it is in this classic writing of St. Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, on the life of St. Anthony, that we can get in touch with the radical spirit of one of the greatest hermits of Christendom.
