Lankaran is one of the largest and oldest cities of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the largest city in the southern region, and the administrative center of Lankaran district. Since July 28, 1971, it has been a city of republican subordination. The city of Lankaran is located at the intersection of 38 north latitude and 40 east longitude, on the southwest coast of the Caspian Sea, in the Lankaran lowland, where Lankaranchay flows into the Caspian Sea. The distance from Baku is 268 km.
Humid subtropical climate, mild winter, dry and hot summer days, and rainy autumn have determined the rich flora and fauna of this region.
Of the historical architectural monuments in Lankaran, the Khan's house, the Small Castle Mosque, the Guldaste minaret, and the ancient Haji Mirza bathhouse, which attract attention with their original facade patterns, are the ones that have survived until now. There are many decorative-applied art workshops in the city. Those who work there are engaged in the art of engraving on wood, stone and metal.
Four historical divisions
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, four historical divisions with different planning structures emerged in the city. These were Gala, Boyuk Bazaar, Kichik Bazaar, Sutemurdov. Gala was located on the border of today's Baloglan Abbasov - Mir Mustafa Khan streets and Lankaran river bank streets.
Boyuk Bazaar was bordered by the current Baloglan Abbasov Street and the bank of the Lankaran river (tinsmiths) neighborhood from the southwest.
Kichik Bazaar was located along the sea coast between the present Tofig Ismayilov and Sattarkhan streets. This included the castle square and the northern outer city of the adjacent free-plan quarters.
Sutamurdov surrounded along the sea coast.
Coat of arms
The upper half of the shield-shaped plate of the coat of arms, divided into two, is the same as the images on the coat of arms of the Caspian region: in the first part, a tiger, and in the second part, slices of burning gas emerging from the ground.
Transportation
Buses and taxis within the city operate regularly. There is also an intercity bus station.
