Dragon Warrior II is a turn-based role-playing video game released in North America for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990 (released in 1987 in Japan on the Famicom as Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line). The objective of the game is to recruit the Prince of Cannock and Princess of Moonbrooke to join your party, locate five crests to obtain the Charm of Rubiss, locate the Eye of Malroth, travel through the Cave to Rhone, use the Charm and Eye to enter Hargon’s castle, defeat Hargon and Malroth to restore peace.

The Dragon Warrior II Randomizer adds customization and replay value to the original retro game, and is raced competitively online. A new overworld map is generated with each randomizer seed, chest and search spot contents are shuffled, enemy monster zones are mostly shuffled and monsters can have different abilities such as spells (sleep, healing, defeat, sacrifice) and/or breath fire. Weapon shop items are shuffled, and weapon & armor power is shuffled with an item’s price reflective of their relative power (good weapons = higher price). XP requirements to level up are reduced to 50%, enemy XP & Gold rewards are increased, and the overall map is smaller, to facilitate faster gameplay. Your characters’ strength, agility, HP, and MP growth upon level up is randomized but generally scaled to finish the game with Prince of Midenhall’s level around the early 20’s. Your characters’ spell learning at each level is shuffled. The randomizer allows you to take advantage of the Hargon Castle equipment glitch, whereby equipping the Falcon Sword and Water Flying Cloth outside the castle then equipping a different (stronger) equipment inside the castle before using the Charm, will give your character both the ability of the FS / WFC and the power of the stronger item too. Additional alterations to the game are available but the description above covers the Standard randomizer flagset.
