Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll (real name: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) in 1865, is one of the most iconic children's stories in the world. But the real Alice wasn’t fiction.
She was Alice Liddell, the daughter of the dean of Christ Church College at Oxford. Carroll was a shy, brilliant mathematics lecturer who became close to the Liddell family, and especially Alice. He told her fantastical stories during afternoon boating trips—tales filled with disappearing cats, shrinking girls, and tyrannical queens. One day, she begged him to write them down and he did.But the relationship between Carroll and Alice has sparked decades of debate. He photographed young girls—including Alice—in costumes. While many claim it was innocent, others see signs of obsession and inappropriate fixation (but it was debated by scholars). The book is a masterpiece of logic and out of this world. But it was born from a connection some scholars now view with caution.
On a summer day in 1862, during a river picnic, Carroll invented a tale to entertain Alice and her sisters. She begged him to write it down and he did.And Wonderland was born. But as Alice grew older, their friendship ended suddenly. Pages of Carroll’s diary from that period are missing or destroyed. Some believe he was asked to stay away. Others say the relationship simply became inappropriate.Alice Liddell married, had children, and lived into her 80s. But for the rest of her life, she was known not as herself—but as “the real Alice.”
