[ELASTIC Demo Series] NETTO – Real-Time Monitoring of Linux Network Stack Performance

NETTO, developed by Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) within the ELASTIC Project, is a tool designed to measure the CPU overhead of the Linux network stack in real time.

The tool uses eBPF-based instrumentation and Linux perf events to capture CPU stack traces and analyse the cost of network functions such as routing, filtering, and packet processing. By using a sampling-based profiling approach, NETTO achieves very low monitoring overhead, enabling continuous performance analysis without impacting system operation.

Within ELASTIC, NETTO helps identify network bottlenecks and performance hotspots across distributed infrastructures. The insights produced by the tool support the optimization of high-speed communication mechanisms and accelerated networking components, which are essential for scalable edge-to-cloud services.

By enabling real-time visibility into network processing costs, NETTO contributes to the development of efficient and reliable communication across FaaS instances, IoT devices, and edge nodes, supporting ELASTIC’s vision of a 6G-native IoT data fabric.
