The New IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume®is one of the boldest and most technically experimental watches IWC has released in years. On paper, it’s already impressive: a full perpetual calendar Big Pilot with a seven-day movement. But what really makes it special is the material itself- Ceralume®.

What makes this watch unique is that nearly the entire watch glows. Not just the hands or dial markers. The case, dial, strap, and even parts of the movement rotor are infused with luminous material. In darkness, the watch emits an intense electric-blue glow that makes it look almost unreal.

Here’s why collectors and enthusiasts are paying so much attention to it:

IWC had teased Ceralume before in prototype form most famously on a one-off watch worn by Lewis Hamilton in 2024. But this is the first full production watch using the material.

Ceralume is essentially ceramic mixed with Super-LumiNova pigments during the manufacturing process. That sounds simple, but technically it’s extremely difficult because ceramic requires high-temperature firing and very precise structural consistency. IWC’s engineering division, XPL, had to develop a proprietary process to make the material durable, evenly luminous, and still resistant to scratches.

In daylight, it appears stealthy and monochromatic with matte and polished white surfaces with subtle grey contrast. It almost resembles a futuristic ceramic sculpture. But in the dark, the entire thing transforms into a glowing blue object where the hands and numerals become silhouettes against the illuminated background.

• Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar architecture
• Moonphase display
• Automatic adjustment for leap years and month lengths until 2100

IWC’s Kurt Klaus design is considered one of the most user-friendly perpetual calendars ever made. Unlike many traditional perpetual calendars requiring multiple pushers, IWC’s system is largely crown-adjusted and mechanically synchronized.
