Off-grid and ignorant in Portugal...but learning to build

A Swedish/Portuguese diplomat and a British journalist walk into the Portuguese countryside and ask for a glass of wine and a new life. What could possibly go wrong?

After nearly 20 years as a BBC foreign correspondent, Alastair Leithead and his wife Ana have moved to a small off the grid farm in southwestern Portugal.

As well as sending regular despatches from Vale Das Estrelas (Valley of the Stars) near the Atlantic coast of Alentejo in a blog, they're also sharing the odd film about a slightly insane, but thoroughly enjoyable, decision.

This one is perhaps summed up by the lines:

"You know you’ve done a couple of good, hard days’ work with your hands when your iPhone no longer recognises you."

And...

"I think that was the point I realised I was actually trying to build a conservatory."
