Epic’s Unreal AI push sparks Fortnite collab backlash

Epic Games is making AI a core part of Unreal Engine, but the strategy is already facing friction. At State of Unreal, Epic signaled that AI will be foundational going forward, including Unreal Engine 5.8’s Experimental MCP plugin that can connect models like Claude and Gemini directly to dev projects. Epic says the goal is faster iteration, less tedious work, and a path toward Unreal Engine 6 early access by the end of 2027. But the backlash may have started right away: Poncle says it is reviewing the planned Vampire Survivors Fortnite collaboration after reports that Epic used generative AI for game assets, including Fortnite characters.
