Flight Deck Control During F-35C Testing • The Ouija Board

Flight Deck Control room aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) during sea-trial testing of F-35C Joint Strike Fighters. Flight Deck Control is where the Aircraft Handling Officer (ACHO - also called the handler or mangler) oversees the movement and positioning of every aircraft on the carrier flight deck. The ACHO uses a tracking tool nicknamed "The Ouija Board" - a scale model replica of the carrier’s flight deck. Miniature planes are moved around on the Ouija Board to reflect the location and status of the aircraft on the carrier's flight deck. When an aircraft moves on deck or it's status changes, it also moves on The Ouija Board and it's status is updated. Filmed on October 2, 2015.
