Electrical Failure During Student Pilot Solo Cross Country; Cessna 172

After completing my 150nm, three airport solo cross country flight, I was returning home when I had an electrical failure resulting in loss of my communications and Mode-C Transponder about 8 miles out from the airport. Landing with no communications is nerve racking at any airport, and especially when you're landing at Centennial, CO (KAPA)... one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country. Thanks to the wise suggestion of my ground course instructor, I had the control tower's phone number programed in my cell phone and was able to call them to get clearance to land. Electrical failure was later determined to be due to the alternator issue which lead to the battery not charging during the 45 minute return leg of the trip.

Handheld Radio:
Here is a link to a good handheld radio that I purchased after this flight and keep in my flight bag in case this ever happens again...

The main lesson this event taught me was to stay calm and continue flying the airplane.
