A Tour of VICTORIA GOZO | Citadel + Walk Around | Drive Malta E8

A tour of Victoria Gozo, the capital city of Malta’s second largest island. I took a walk around the Citadel, Independence Square & the pretty little streets close to St George's Basilica.

After a long day of sightseeing on Gozo Island I made it to the historic city centre of Victoria where I took an evening walk around and did a bit of sightseeing along the way. Gozo is definitely one of the best places to visit in Malta and it was fantastic to spend a whole day driving around and visiting so many cool places.

My first stop was at Villa Rundle Gardens where amongst the pretty fountains and relaxing parkland I delved into some of the city’s history. I then walked through the narrow alleyways and tiny streets close to St George's Basilica where people were out enjoying the evening and relaxing over a drink or two. It was clearly the city centre and from empty streets just a few blocks away things suddenly started to heat up. I arrived at Independence Square and then headed over to the Citadel.

The Victoria Citadel (Cittadella) in Gozo was built on a hilltop where people have lived ever since the Bronze Age. Fortifications were first built there around 3,500 years ago but today's city walls and defensive towers were mostly reconstructed by the Order of Saint John in the last 500 years. The views from the top are stunning and it is possible to see over most of the island, however because I visited in the dark visibility wasn’t as good. Visit in daylight if you can! Still it was an extraordinary experience and fun walking around the Citadel late at night.

And with that my unforgettable day driving around Gozo Malta was over. Having the car was extremely valuable and I was able to visit so much more than if I had relied on public transport. I think I also packed more in than any tour or excursion would have allowed me to - plus I was able to set my own agenda and pace to see the sights I personally wanted to see. Driving Malta and Gozo is unquestionably my preferred choice of seeing the islands and certainly my recommended mode of transport if you’re able.
