Glad to Inaugurate Meghalaya’s First Community-Focused Biochar Unit in Ri Bhoi

Glad to inaugurate the Biochar Unit at Umsli in Ri Bhoi District — a first-of-its-kind community-focused carbon removal initiative in Meghalaya.

This project will convert sustainably harvested bamboo into biochar, a stable carbon-rich material that improves soil health, enhances agricultural productivity, and locks carbon away for hundreds of years.

With Meghalaya’s soils being largely acidic, biochar will play an important role in improving moisture retention, restoring soil fertility, and supporting sustainable farming practices.

The Umsli unit has the potential to remove nearly 6,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next 20 years while generating significant revenue opportunities for local communities. Together with upcoming units across the State, a model is being built where climate action directly benefits the people.
