Elixir Just Became the First Gradually Typed Language—Here's Why #Shorts
Elixir v1.20 just became the first gradually typed mainstream language.
Elixir v1.20 shipped June 2026 with gradual typing—the first mainstream language to do it right. Every language picks a side: static types catch bugs early but slow you down, dynamic types let you ship fast but break at runtime. Elixir's creator José Valim spent three years building a type system that gives you both—you opt in per function, and untyped code still runs. But here's the breakthrough—it infers types across module boundaries. That means you can type one critical function and Elixir propagates safety guarantees through your entire codebase without rewriting anything. TypeScript tried this in 2012 and failed.
