Franchise Operational Excellence Creating a fail fast culture

With so many insights from our last podcast with Conrad Kolba, we had to have him join us again.

In this session we focus on franchise operations and structure best practices and a few unique ways Painter 1 has created a fail fast culture to encourage franchise owners to experiment within their model. Interestingly enough, franchisees tend to follow their process better after having a chance to test the waters with their own entrepreneurial concepts within their model.

We also discuss the need for franchise founders to get out of the way of their own success, and to focus on coaching their franchises in effective business practices more than just following the ops manual.

Here are some of the highlights.

Allow franchisees to make mistakes
- This is how they learn
- Go into it with the idea that their first three months is going to be a disaster…but this is their time to learn, to make mistakes, and to never make those mistakes again
- Allow franchisees to deviate from the prescribed plan

Revenue
- Need to live off of royalty revenue
- Never budget to sell franchises, or to have revenue from franchise sales – disaster waiting to happen
- Vendor rebates (Don’t be greedy)

Franchise System Mind Shift
- Need to not be operationally minded anymore
- Teaching the franchisee what the business does is one thing, but teaching them how to run their business is far more important
- Need to remind themselves that these new franchisees need help in ALL aspects of the business, not just operations
- New franchisors tend to focus on operations because that’s what they know so well…that’s what got them to that point

Founders are their own biggest problems
- Get out of your own way
- You are only good at a few things, not all of them
- Allow others who know what they’re doing do their jobs
- You don’t have to have the last say in everything that happens in the business – trust your people
- Accept that your model that you love so much could be ameliorated
- Don’t be so stuck up that you can’t take advice about your business
- Not just your business, but also the operations of your franchisees’ business
