Heil 5000 Rear Loaders - Cleanup Week 2020 in San Luis Obispo

Cleanup week is a biannual event for the City of San Luis Obispo, along with the rest of the county that this Waste Connections yard services, where any resident can set out unlimited bags, bulky items, or extra trash they have accumulated on collection day, free of charge. Unfortunately this year due to Covid, cleanup events in every city and county area except the City of San Luis Obispo have been cancelled.
I went out on the Thursday route to get some video of this never before seen operation. Good judgement on my part, as the Thursday route encompasses much of where the Cal Poly student population lives off-campus, so as you could imagine some of these setouts were quite massive. On this side of the route however, things were a little more manageable, but cross the dividing road and I saw piles of frat house sofas, die tables, yard waste, and other shitty furniture enough to fill up half of one of these trucks.
First thing in the morning, I followed (unintentionally) out of the yard 1063, one of our many Volvo WXLL Heil Durapack 5000s, this one being unique as it is the first one I’ve heard with what I believe to be a Cummins L10. I will make another attempt in the future to get more video of this truck as long as it does shoot up an hour north to Cambria, which is where I have a feeling it usually goes. 1063 can be seen in this video taking both cleanup week items along with residential trash, so you get some cart tipping action thrown in their with this truck’s unique ARE tippers (according to Will).
The other truck in this video is 1077, a 2004 Autocar DP5000 on some heavier setouts in the neighborhood one over. I like the “Curbside Recycling” decals on this truck along with the other rear and side loaders from this era, not to mention the loud engine that I haven’t really heard in their other Autocar WXLLs – someone help me name the engine.

Some of you may be wondering if they used that Volvo Heil Formula 5000 I took a photo of back in January, and though it didn’t leave the yard on Thursday, of course it was gone when I swung by the yard on my way to work Friday morning. Just my luck. Hopefully I can get a video of it soon.

Aside from that, huge thank you to both very friendly and hard-working crews for letting me film and making this video possible, and a quick hi to any of the guys at the office who may be watching this video as well.
