STROPS FROM SCRATCH #2: Fleshing the Hides, Cordwood Challenge
Fleshing the deer hides and renewing the lime to prepare the skins for tanning into leather. In the next tanning video the hair will be removed from the skins and processed for tanning with oak bark.

The hides have been in the lime for a while now and it’s time to start fleshing them and strengthen the lime if needed. Fleshing looks simple enough, but there is a technique to using the scraper, just like anything else. For now, I’m scraping off the bulk of the fat and flesh. Since the flesh side will be scraped repeatedly during processing, I don’t have to do a thorough job now. It will all come off as a matter of course. I added some more lime to the lime solution since I put in a third skin.
