Let's start with, what is refraction?
Refraction
The change of direction of light because of the change of medium is known as Refraction or Refraction of Light. The ray of light changes its direction or the phenomenon of refraction takes place because of the difference in speed in different media.
The light travels at a faster speed in rare medium and at a slower speed in the denser medium. The nature of media is taken as a relative. For example, the air is a rarer medium than water or glass.
The refraction of light refers to the change in direction of a ray of light when it travels from one medium to another. For example, the figure below shows a ray of light traveling from a medium of air to that of water.
Refractive Index
Refractive Index is the extent of change of direction of light in a given pair of media. The refractive index is a relative value of the speed of light in the given pair of media. Thus, to calculate the refractive Index the speed of light in two media is taken.
