Infection in Labor? Chorioamnionitis - What it Means for Your Birth! | Sarah Lavonne

Using the word "infection" in labor I hear talked about all the time! In fact, I even talk about it when I speak about the risks of your water bag breaking! What does an infection in labor mean? What is happening? Can your baby get sick? What symptoms would you have? More importantly, what does it mean for what to expect for your labor and birth? Does it mean a c-section?

Today I'm going to talk all about this infection, when it happens, what puts you at risk for chorioamnionitis! Clinical chorioamnionitis or intraamniotic infection (IAI) is a disorder characterized by acute inflammation of the membranes and chorion of the placenta, typically due to polymicrobial bacterial infection in women whose membranes have ruptured. It is a common complication of pregnancy associated with potentially serious adverse maternal, fetal, and neonatal effects, as well as increased long-term risks for cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental disabilities.

- Neurodevelopmental impairment
- preterm labor
- fetal growth restriction
- severe neonatal morbidity
- brain injury
- development of chronic lung disease in the child
