Stepping through simulation

Friction seems to play no part in the physics solution for this simulation: the forklift tool moves in the x-direction but the object does not move. Until, that is, it comes into contact with the flat side of the tool, and in just a few steps after that the simulation breaks.

View collisions is on. The object comprises a couple of layers so that's why it looks like a few vertical walls inside. It seems that things work fine until shortly after the object collides with the gripper side. View collisions is on. For a few steps I turned on the view contacts option, and those show up as blue spheres. I turned them off prior to the fateful step where the sim breaks. I turned them on again afterwards but nothing showed up.
