March 1st, 2014. 2 time Olympic Gold Medalist Vasyl Lomachenko in only his 2nd professional bout takes on the seasoned Orlando Salido for the vacant WBO World Featherweight Championship. Going into the fight, Lomachenko had only one bout which he won in 2013, against 25(15)-3 Jose Ramirez. Salido on the other hand, was an 18 year veteran of the sport with a record of 40(28)-12-2.

Despite being the much more experienced fighter, Salido came in as a 4.75-1 underdog against the 1-0 Lomachenko due to his vast amateur experience and achievements.

Salido was the reigning WBO title holder going into the fight but he lost the title in the scales as he failed to make the Featherweight limit of 126, coming in 2 pounds heavier, thus stripped of the title. Salido would proceed to rehydrate to 147 pounds; being a full blown Welterweight (as noted by Roy Jones Jr.) going into the fight, outweighing Lomachenko by nearly 15 pounds at fight night.

Lomachenko on the other hand, raised doubts among the boxing world as to his decision to fight for a world title against the seasoned throwback fighter Salido in only his 2nd pro outing. Lomachenko in fact intended to make his pro debut in a world title fight, but he was told by Bob Arum that it is only possible in his 2nd bout.

Interestingly, Salido had good records against southpaws particularly with knockout wins over Orlando Cruz and twice against Juan Manuel Lopez.

The fight was very close with both fighters having their moments and Salido’s advantage in terms of his years of experiences was apparent throughout the fight although Vasyl’s amazing athleticism and skills troubled the slower veteran time and again. But Salido’s weight advantage of nearly 15 pounds served to great advantage as Lomachenko was evidently troubled particularly at close range.

However, Salido threw innumerable number of low blows throughout the fight and there was not a single round in which Salido did not throw punches south of the border. Despite Salido’s excessive low blows which definitely affected the outcome of the fight, referee Laurence Cole failed to make a single point deduction and gave only 2 warnings to Salido and in several occasions appear to deliberately ignore those illegal shots even when Salido threw them in plain sight.

Laurence Cole was severely criticized for his terrible refereeing job, as Jim Lampley stated at the end of the fight;

“A spirited performance by Salido, a terrific attempt at a comeback by Lomachenko, and a dreadful refereeing job from Laurence Cole.”

With countless amount of low blows and weighing in a full blown Welterweight, Orlando “Siri” Salido as an 18 year veteran of the sport with 9 world title fights, barely edged Lomachenko with an SD. Had Lomachenko won the fight, he would have broke Saensak Muangsurin’s record by winning a world title bout in only 2 fights; Muangsurin won the WBC World Super Lightweight strap in his 3rd pro bout, knocking out Perico Fernandez in July 1975.

However, Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko would tie with Muangsurin’s record by outpointing Gary Russell Jr, capturing the vacant WBO World Featherweight title in June of the same year.
